The tennis world is eagerly awaiting the announcement of Rafael Nadal’s retirement as rumors mount about the end of his impressive career. Naomi Broady, former professional player and respected commentator, is convinced that Nadal has a clear plan for his future but has not yet revealed his cards.

The 22-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one was already named by some experts as a potential retirement candidate during the French Open or the Olympic Games.

But Nadal continued playing after those events and has now withdrawn from the US Open. The Spaniard’s next big appearance is expected to be the Laver Cup event in Berlin next month, an event seen by many as a possible stage for Nadal’s farewell.
“Nadal certainly has a plan in mind but he’s keeping his cards close to his chest,” Broady told Sky Sports. “As we saw with Sir Andy Murray, such players will only retire when they feel truly ready.
Rafa still enjoys the sport of tennis very much. If he can continue, he probably wants to, which could be a reason why he didn’t announce his retirement at Roland Garros.” Broady speculates that Nadal may be banking on the Laver Cup to end his career in a big way.
“It would be incredible if Nadal could enjoy a celebration to match his career, like Roger Federer,” said Broady. “Many might have thought he would enjoy such a celebration at the Olympics or at Roland Garros against Philippe-Chatrier, but who knows?”
Nadal’s thoughts on his career
After his doubles loss at the Olympic Games, the last time Nadal was on the court, he said he was “completely free” about the rest of his career. “I have total freedom and I have tried all my life to make the decision about how and when I feel,” Nadal said.
“I’m a rather quiet person in this regard and I need my time. When I know what my next step is, I will let you know. But right now my next step is to go home, spend time with my family and relax.” Nadal reflected on the last few months, which have been both exciting and challenging for him.
“These months were exciting because I played tennis again; but they were also hard because I went through many difficult moments and disappointments, as well as beautiful moments… Now I have to manage everything, analyse it well and see how I feel.”
