It has been a return to get excited about the victory of the champion of 22 Grand Slams, Rafael Nadal, who won his first match after 349 days of absence due to injury, a victory that came after beating Dominic Thiem 7–5 and 6-3 in the framework of the first round of the ATP 250 de Brisbane.
The 37-year-old left-hander shared his emotions after a tough road back to the ATP circuit. “I felt good, especially when the public supports you like that…. It has been the longest period without playing a tournament since I started my career.
Coming back and feeling the love of the public is a great feeling. “Today has been an exciting and important day,” confessed Rafael Nadal after competing for the first time in almost a year.
Nadal reached another historic mark
The owner of 14 Roland Garros showed a solid game against the Austrian in the Pat Rafter Arena and with the victory he reached another record in his historic career.
The 37-year-old left-hander has achieved the victory number 1069 of his professional career, surpassing the legendary Ivan Lendl in a triumph, who remains with 1068 laurels. Above Nadal are Novak Djokovic (1088), Roger Federer (1251) and Jimmy Connors (1274).
Nadal will return to action this Wednesday to face Australian Jason Kubler in the round of 16 of the ATP 250 in Brisbane. The world number 102 defeated Russian Aslan Karatsev 6-4, 6-7 (retirement).
