Rafael Nadal announces withdrawal from US Open

New York. Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, announced on Wednesday that he would withdraw from the US Open, saying he did not feel capable of performing at his best level.

“I don’t think I’ll be able to give 100% this time,” Nadal posted on his social media account X.

Nadal, a four-time US Open champion, said his next event would be the Laver Cup in September in Berlin.

Her withdrawal from the US Open (August 26-September 8) will mark her sixth absence in the last seven Grand Slam tournaments, with the only exception being her first-round exit from this year’s French Open.

“Hi everyone, I’m writing to announce that I’ve decided not to compete at this year’s US Open, a venue where I have incredible memories,” said Nadal, 38. “I’ll miss the special evening sessions in New York, at Ashe.”

“Thank you to all my fans, especially the Americans. I will miss you all,” he said.

Nadal competed at the Paris Olympics at Roland Garros, where he has won 14 French Open singles titles.

The Spaniard, who won Olympic gold in singles at Beijing 2008, fell to Serbian Novak Djokovic, the eventual champion, in the second round of the singles at Paris 2024, and together with Carlos Alcaraz he lost in the doubles quarter-finals.

Last month in Bastad, Nadal reached his first ATP final since 2022, where he was beaten by Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

Nadal’s last Grand Slam title came at the 2022 French Open. He last won the US Open in 2019, but he will now have missed four of the last five US Opens, with the exception of his fourth-round run in 2022.
