Rafael Correa says that “if they leave him” he will seek the Vice Presidency of the Republic in the elections of 2021 | Policy | News

Quito –

Rafael Correa confirmed that “if they leave him” he will be a candidate for the vice presidency of the Republic, in the next presidential and assembly elections scheduled for February 2021, promoted by the Fuerza Compromiso Social movement. The intended candidate for the Presidency has yet to be announced.

Correa participated this Thursday in a virtual press conference to question the recommendation of the State Comptroller, which asks the National Electoral Council (CNE) to cancel the registration of four political organizations, among them, the Social Commitment Force with which he wants to participate in the upcoming elections.

“If they leave me, I will be a candidate for the vice presidency of the Republic. This is not the time to talk about candidacies, but mine is practically defined, so they try to avoid it. If they allow me to be a candidate, we will see if that helps an electoral victory. than being there, for my country and for my persecuted companions. We are honest people, the corrupt are the ones who persecute us, “said the former president, who faces a first instance sentence for the crime of bribery, in the case of Bribes 2012- 2016.

The politician residing in Belgium questioned the Comptroller’s report, as well as the previous investigation that started the Attorney General to the president of the CNE, Diana Atamaint and the counselor Esthela Steel, for hiring Luis Loyo, former director of Electoral Processes and who was sentenced to one year in prison for the crime of influence peddling.

He assured that the objective is to prevent him from participating in the elections by eliminating the movement to which he joined, after relations with President Lenin Moreno were broken, and he left Alianza PAIS (AP).

“They chase us out of panic, they used to chase us out of hatred, now they panic,” he insisted.

Accused the current comptroller Pablo Celi of wanting to “break the rule of law” by determining that Social Commitment Force it had failed to comply with the 1.5% of the signatures required to register a movement, as established by the Constitution.

He added that Celi was “right hand” for six years from the ex-comptroller (fugitive from justice in the Odebrecht case), Carlos Pólit, whom “I did not know,” he clarified.

The movements that were observed in the Comptroller’s report are, in addition, Social Justice, by Jimmy Salazar, husband of Pamela Martínez, former adviser to Correa; Together We Can, by the former Azuay, Paúl Carrasco; and Libertad es Pueblo, by Gary Moreno, brother of President Lenin Moreno. (I)
