Spain’s tennis player Rafael Nadal, current world number three, will miss this year’s US Open Series tournament in Cincinnati after injuring his right foot., reported on Wednesday the organization of the tournament on its official website.
The announcement comes a day after Nadal also withdrew from the ATP 1000 tournament in Toronto, where he was scheduled to face young South African Lloyd Harris, world number 24 on Wednesday.
Alongside Nadal, tournament champion in 2013, Canadian Milos Raonic, world number 23, who suffers from an Achilles heel injury, and last year in the New York Bubble, he was vice-champion of the tournament, it will not compete either next week in Cincinnati.
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, who won the 2019 Western & Southern Open when it was last held in Cincinnati, will be the tournament’s men’s favorite as the second player in the ATP rankings and seed in the tournament.
He will be joined by two-time English champion Andy Murray (2011, 2008), as well as previous Croatian winners Marin Cilic (2016) and Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov (2017).
The women’s peloton includes defending champion and two-time winner Victoria Azarenka (2020, 2013) of Belarus as well as former champions Karolina Pliskova (2016), Garbine Muguruza of Spain (2017) and Madison Keys (2019) of the United States.
Nadal, who made his debut in the ATP 500 tournament in Washington last week and was knocked out in the third round by Harris, also announced his retirement from the Toronto tournament., confirming on Tuesday that he still has pain in his foot and cannot move around the track as he wishes.
Now Nadal’s goal is to try and rest, at least two weeks, before he arrives. the US Open, in which he hopes to participate, after deciding last year not to participate in the Flushing Meadows bubble.
Raonic, who fought for the title last year against Serbian Novak Djokovic, was last in action in July when he lost to young American prospect Brandon Nakashima in the eighth finals of the Atlanta tournament.
In addition to the defeats of Nadal and Raonic, the Cincinnati tournament will also see the absences of Djokovic, who is aiming for the grand slam this season, and the legendary Roger Federer in the men’s competition.
While the women will not be the Americans Serena and Venus Williams as well as Sofia Kenin who have already announced that they will not participate in the tournament which will start next week.
