On Tuesday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski met with representatives of the Swedish Wallenberg family; The topic of the talks was primarily industrial cooperation, including green energy and investment policy – PAP learned unofficially from diplomatic sources.
Meeting of the head of Polish diplomacy and representatives of a well-known and influential Scandinavian family, including: entrepreneurs and bankers, took place at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Warsaw. The ministry does not plan to make a statement after this conversation because it was not of a state nature and concerned mainly the corporation’s plans.
Information about the Wallenbergs’ visit to Poland was confirmed to PAP by family spokeswoman Laura Safir. In the e-mail, she emphasized that the delegation went to Warsaw before Poland took over the presidency of the EU Council. “The goal is to get to know the country and its priorities,” Safir explained.
According to the Wallenbergs’ spokeswoman, the family will meet with representatives of the world of politics, industry, science and companies in which the Wallenbergs currently hold shares.
The delegation included, among others: Marcus Wallenberg, Jacob Wallenberg, Peter Wallenberg Jr., as well as high-ranking company managers – Christian Cederholm and Hakan Buskhe.
The Wallenberg family is considered the most influential family of financiers and investors in Sweden. According to the media, it indirectly controls one third of Sweden’s GDP.
The sixth generation of Wallenbergs manages, controls or holds shares in the largest Swedish and international companies, such as Ericsson, Saab, Electrolux, ABB, Stora Enso and SAS Group. The family also owns one of the largest Scandinavian banks, SEB, founded in 1856 by the financial progenitor of the family, Andre Oscar Wallenberg.
The role of the Wallenbergs, owners of the Saab arms concern, increased in 2022, after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, due to the increased demand for weapons and military equipment.
As reported by the “ETC” newspaper, the main negotiator in the talks with Turkey before Sweden’s accession to NATO, a high-ranking official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oscar Stenstroem, was employed by the Wallenbergs after the mission.
In Sweden, the famous family also operates through a foundation, awarding grants for the development of research and education.
As you can read on the family’s official website, the Wallenbergs are guided by the Latin maxim “Esse non videri”, i.e. “To act, not just be visible”. Another famous quote is the words of Marcus “Dodde” Wallenberg, who – convincing him to abandon investments in railways and get involved in SAS airlines – wrote in a letter to his brother: “The transition from the old to the future is the only tradition worth cultivating.”
