Radioactive Waste from Cancer Medicine Found in Recycling Company in Austria

Italian waste from cancer medicine was apparently not disposed of properly.

The discovery of radioactive waste in a recycling company in St. Michael in Upper Styria (Leoben district) caused a stir on Monday afternoon. The manager called the police around 1 p.m.

The slightly radioactive material from cancer medicine was noticed in an Italian waste bale on a truck when it was routinely passed through a control device. People and the environment were not in danger, the police emphasized in a broadcast in the evening.

The bale of rubbish was secured in a separate area. Radiation detectors from the police and a radiation measurement technician from Graz University of Technology examined the material. The radioactive waste was finally transferred to a special drum and is to be disposed of properly in the future.
