Jakarta – The mystery of the existence of life on other planets is increasingly a question mark. Moreover, recently researchers discovered radio signals from a planet that is 12 light years away from Earth. Is this a sign that life on alien planets is real?
Reported from detikInetastronomers studying extraterrestrial life can now go one step further by finding exoplanets that can emit radio signals.
Quoting News.com Australia, Thursday (6/4/2023), the magnetic field is the first indicator that the planet is habitable. That’s because the planet can prevent radiation.
Radiation on Earth itself serves as a shield for life from cosmic radiation and charged particles released by the Sun. This process occurs in the core of Planet Earth.
Currently, US researchers believe they have found an alien planet called YZ Ceti that has a magnetic field. This makes life possible there.
Sebastian Pineda and Jackie Villadsen, as researchers are the people who found radio signals on the planet with the help of radio telescopes. The planet deflects radio signals repeatedly from the star it orbits.
“We saw the initial explosion and it looked beautiful,” Pineda said.
The planet is 12 light years away from Earth and interacts with the star via radio signals. But because it is invisible, it is difficult to determine whether the planet is generating its own magnetic field.
“What we did was find a way to see them,” said Villadsen.
Meanwhile, the US National Science Foundation program director for the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, Joe Pesce, said the discovery was important for knowing how magnetic fields work on other planets.
“This research not only shows the planet has a magnetic field, but provides a promising method for finding more,” said Pesce.
The two researchers agree that there is still a lot of work to be done to confirm that the planet has a magnetic field.
