Radio maker Rob Stenders wins the Pop Media Prijs 2020 | NOW

Radio maker Rob Stenders (54) has won the Pop Media Prize 2020. This was announced on Saturday at Eurosonic Noorderslag. The prize is awarded to people or media who have made a special contribution to pop journalism in the past year.

Stenders (54) has been on national radio since 1985. He started at VARA on Radio 3 and now makes programs for NPO Radio 2. The jury praises Stenders’ “enthusiasm, his relentless passion for music and the ability to bring new music to the public”. Thanks in part to Stenders’ promotion on the radio, Danny Vera came with his number in 2019 Roller Coaster at number four in the Top 2000.

In addition to Stenders, the radio broadcaster Red Light Radio and documentary maker Carine Bijlsma were nominated this year. Since 2010, Red Light Radio has been making online radio from a small room in the Red Light District. Bijlsma made the documentary Devil’s Pie: D’Angelo, in which she follows the enigmatic artist D’Angelo.

The Pop Media Prize has been awarded since 1995 as a reward for an important contribution to pop journalism. This can be a person, but also a program, book or documentary. The performance in the past year counts the most, but the entire oeuvre of the nominee is included in the assessment. A prize of 3,000 euros is attached to the prize.
