Radio Jornalera opens in NYC; community radio

Radio Jornalera Nueva York en La Colmena, is a radio station that wants to become the voice of day laborers and immigrants in the city.

“They are going to be very supportive of workers, and migrant workers specifically here in Staten Island, in a very conservative area,” explained Yesenia Mata, director of La Colmena.

Radio Jornalera is a community radio station that was born in California and has 7 radio stations throughout the country. Its mission is to provide resources and support on issues such as immigration and employment.

Here in New York, Radio Jornalera is part of La Colmena, a community center that offers legal advice and other resources to immigrants.

Jesús Benavidez is a day laborer and will be one of the announcers behind this program. He believes that such a station is necessary for the public to know the daily difficulties of day laborers.

“It is a great help … that others tell us their stories or us and so we can share what they know and what we can tell them too,” said Benavidez.

The goal is to create a communication platform for immigrant workers, especially after the lack of contact during the pandemic.

In addition, it will serve as a channel for the community to continue the fight for immigrant rights.

“We are very happy to hear their stories, to see how they are organized, but more than anything how they are going to collectively organize here in New York,” Mata added.

Charlie Jaya is the technician behind the production. He says it took him a month to turn this office into a radio station. The process wasn’t easy at all, but he made sure to learn how each team works.

“This radio is going to have the possibility to teach and communicate to everyone, that they have to pay attention that there are many resources available to them,” said Jaya.

You can listen to Radio Jornalera NY on their Facebook page where every two weeks they will broadcast their program from 6 to 7 at night.
