NEW YORK – The Tribeca Film Festival comes to a close Saturday night with an event that many would have thought unthinkable 12 months ago: a major Hollywood-level premiere with crowds of vaccinated people.
The 12-day festival became one of the first in the United States to host in-person events since the COVID-19 pandemic closed cinemas and large-scale events in early 2020. Last month, festival organizers , along with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, announced that the special closing night celebration would be held at Radio City Music Hall. Audience members will also be able to attend without masks.
An untitled documentary produced by Pilot Boys Productions by Dave Chapelle will be screened for the vaccinated audience. The film focuses on a rural Ohio town during the early months of the pandemic and how the town’s younger residents responded to the movement. Black Lives Matter after the murder of George Floyd.
Big-name stars are expected to walk the red carpet once again, including the 2021 festival jury members.
The closing night of the Tribeca Festival follows nearly two weeks of extensive programming across the city, including a historic opening night screening of “In the Heights“that plays simultaneously in each county.
The return to Radio City Music Hall marks a significant milestone on New York’s path to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Having Radio City back at 100% capacity and without the use of masks, with people enjoying New York and the arts will not only be symbolic and metaphorical, but I think it will go a long way towards recovering this state in general.” Cuomo said during a conference in May. “People are going to say, ‘So if I’m not vaccinated I can’t go?’ That’s how it is.”
Every event held at the iconic New York City venue will require attendees to be fully vaccinated.
“[Robert] De Niro and I started the festival 19 years ago as the governor said after 9/11 with the purpose of bringing people back to the center, “said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the festival.” Now, in the wake of another crisis, our founding mission is even more relevant today. “
The 20th Tribeca Film Festival returned after a pandemic hiatus with an expansion of open-air screenings throughout New York City.
This year’s festival, normally held in the spring, ran for 12 days in June, with events at outdoor venues such as Battery, Hudson Yards, Pier 57 Rooftop, Brookfield Place, MetroTech Commons, and Empire Outlets.
