Defender Radim Šimek found himself on the waiver list, where he was sent by San Jose. Will another NHL club reach out for him, or will he head to the SJ Barracuda farm team?
The 31-year-old hockey player worked hard in the summer, looking forward to his seventh season in the Sharks organization, but so far one disaster after another has hit him.
No sooner had he arrived overseas than he was injured in the first pre-season game when he blocked Nikita Nesterenko’s shot. “I block fifty of them every year, but it hit me in the worst possible place,” he recounted.

“I worked hard in the Czech Republic all summer, and then when I came here I was in shape and ready to play. And then it will happen in the first third of the warm-up match,” the player, who is downright unlucky with the injury, shook his head.
He suffered a concussion, multiple knee injuries, covid and more. That is why he played only 209 games in five seasons in the best league in the world with a balance of seven goals and 22 assists.
And when he went into the huddle and waited for an early return to the game, the management of San Jose placed him on the waiver list. The participant of three world championships must therefore wait to see what happens next…
If no other NHL club reaches for him within the next twenty-four hours, he will head to the San Jose Barracuda farm team, which operates in the AHL.
Bad news considering he is in the final year of his contract and wanted to prove himself. “I try to do my best every day. If I play well, the contract extension will come,” Šimek said on Wednesday.
