Radim Rulík Preparing Czech National Hockey Team for Swiss Hockey Games Without Goalkeeper Roman Will – Coach Expresses Frustration Over Club Friction during International Break

With a few exceptions, the same squad as a month ago played for about an hour in the Holešovice arena. The national team led by coach Radim Rulík started preparations for the Swiss Hockey Games on Monday. For the time being, however, without goalkeeper Roman Will, who flew to Finland with Pardubice for the quarter-final rematch of the Champions League.

“Roman will join us only at Wednesday’s training. We had prepared the option that Šimon Zajíček would come from Litvínov. Unfortunately, he was injured in the match yesterday, so he was replaced by Adam Brízgala from Kladno,” explained Rulík to journalists.

Have you tried to talk Dynamo into letting him go after all?
We went into it with the understanding that it is more than enough for us like this. I must say that it is a little different for a goalkeeper than for a player. We didn’t mind at all that it would arrive on Wednesday.

“I didn’t invent the Champions League being played during the international break.”

And what about David Tomášek and Roman Červenko? After all, their teams are also eyeing the quarter-finals of the Champions League…
It wasn’t cool there at all. But since they are players who – unlike the goalkeeper – are embedded in a certain system, we wanted them to be here. I am very sorry that there was such friction. I didn’t invent that the Champions League is played during the international break. I think it’s unfortunate and I hope the clubs will work to prevent it from happening again. It is unpleasant for me as a coach who nominates players, as well as for the managers and coaches at the club. If the Champions League was played before or after the international break, this would not have happened at all.

For example, have you argued that national team action is higher than club duties?
That’s more of a question for the managers, they will tell you more. They were at those meetings, I wasn’t. It wasn’t easy.

With regard to the situation around Will: do you assume that Dominik Pavlát will get priority in Prague?
Any variant can occur. We still have a few training sessions ahead of us and we’ll see how healthy the goalkeepers will be. Roman is not with us yet. Maybe he won’t be catching on Tuesday either, I can’t predict that and I’m not clear about it.

At the end of the week, Jakub Galvas and David Kaše excused themselves due to illness, Filip Pyrochta and Petr Kodýtek arrived instead…
When I sat down with Petr, I told him that it is not that we are not satisfied with his game, but that we want to look at other centers and have a little more insight. Otherwise, I told him that he would be the first to be contacted. Finally it happened.

“The system won’t be done in three training sessions, that’s an awfully short time.”

And Pyrocht’s defender?
We chose the option of a back who was already in Karjale. He didn’t disappoint, so we reached for him.

Is it an advantage for you now that the selection has only undergone cosmetic modifications? Players already know what to expect from you.
Sure, but the system won’t be done in three training sessions, that’s an awfully short time. The players have been in the clubs for a month, now we are trying to revive it so that they remember it again.

What role are you planning for Roman Červenk – the expected leader of the Czech offensive?
He will have the same position as everyone else. We don’t share it. He will play power play, five on five, and if necessary, also weakening.

Can you tell if he will play in all three games?
No, but it’s already ready. I’ll tell him first, not the media.

You mentioned on the nomination paper that your opponents will be more careful about you. Did you tailor the preparation specifically for this?
Not at all. It’s not about coming up with something different, it’s about getting a great performance out of the players. That decides.

“You can prepare for something, you can’t prepare for something at all. I will believe in my work.”

So you want to write a speech about how the national team defeated the opponents in Karjale?
Rather move certain things. The Finns have a very successful coach, and I don’t believe that he would fundamentally change his tactics. The Swedes have a similar situation, but they have a coach who changes the game during the match. He reaches for the signals a lot, tries to surprise the opponent. Of course, this is not pleasant. The Swedish players praise him, he brings something new to it. You can prepare for some things, but not at all. I will believe in my work.

After one training session in Holešovice, you will move to the O2 arena tomorrow. Do you take it as a complication or a bare fact?
The biggest complication is for the custodians, who had to unpack all the materials so that the players were fully protected. Now they have to pack it up again and take it to the O2 arena. This is no problem for players and coaches. Unfortunately, nothing could be done about it, the ice would not be available today.
