I expected more from Stefan Yanev as Minister of Defense. This was stated by President Rumen Radev.
“Stefan Yanev was a successful prime minister in difficult times for Bulgaria. It was his government that started the change and showed that the country can be governed in a different way. He restored hope to the people. This government organized fair elections, which brought the current rulers to power. But as Minister of Defense, I expected more – both as an initiative, and as a commitment to the problems of the Bulgarian army, and as work to ensure its combat effectiveness to accelerate the process of modernization, “he said.
“Since there are all sorts of rumors again about some new political project of mine with new proxies, I want to say – I do not do any political projects with anyone. “I am strictly fulfilling my constitutional obligations within the scope of my powers,” the president said.
Zakov: No decision can be imposed on any Bulgarian minister
Asked if he knew about the last-minute change of nomination for a new Minister of Defense and if he approved of the current one, he replied: “I know Mr. Zakov and his work as a permanent representative in our NATO mission and my opinion of him is very good. I expect him to be able to get into the complex problems and deep processes that are going on in the Bulgarian Armed Forces on the ground. ” According to him, one cannot always get a real idea of these processes from Brussels.
Radev stated that he expects the Minister of Defense, regardless of his name, to defend the Bulgarian national interest.

“This fratricidal, shameful aggression and war in Ukraine, which is destroying people and leading to destruction and suffering, deserves sanctions. All of Europe and the world are united around this. As for military equipment, this is a decision entirely within the competence of the Bulgarian government. It must take it and it is very important – the Bulgarian parliament, if there is such a decision, must approve it, “the president added.
