Radev: Early elections are a last resort – 2024-03-05 09:41:44

/ world today news/ President Rumen Radev stated that possible early parliamentary elections can only be a final option for a way out of the political crisis. The head of state urged the parliamentary parties to show responsibility in a comment on the requested vote of no confidence in the government, the debates on which are coming up tomorrow:

“The debates and the vote itself should be aimed at solving the interests of the people. Before we even talk about debates, about voting, about an early vote, it should be clear that here in the coming days and weeks there are very important challenges of competence to be solved and the current government and the current parliament, and they cannot escape from them,” President Radev told Bulgarian reporters in the Latvian capital Riga, where he arrived to participate in the meeting of the “Three Seas” initiative.

When asked if he is ready with the composition of an official cabinet, Radev replied that he has so far proven that he does not run away from responsibility: “So far, I have appointed three official cabinets and all three have coped with the challenges before them”.

The president rejected the accusations of BSP representatives that the head of state attacked the government together with GERB and DPS. He also responded to Vice Prime Minister Kornelia Ninova’s words to him, that it is meanness to accumulate a personal rating, using the patriotism of Bulgarians on the subject of North Macedonia:

“She demonstrates ignorance of the processes she is talking about, and this, in my opinion, is unacceptable for a deputy prime minister. Have you seen anywhere that I am standing by GERB and DPS? This is absurd. Long before the protests happened, you knew my position against the policy of GERB”.

From the president’s words, it became clear that there is no time for Bulgaria to lift the veto on the start of negotiations between North Macedonia and the European Union until the end of the French presidency. According to him, the government must first update our framework position based on the expertise of the Foreign Ministry, in which the proposals of the French presidency will also be reflected, and then send the position to the parliament.
