Rumen Radev stated today that the policy pursued by the Republic of North Macedonia is moving the country away from membership in the European Union. This is how the president commented on the statement of his colleague Stevo Pendarovski, according to whom “the existence of a Macedonian minority in Bulgaria has been confirmed by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg”.
“Apparently, some politicians in North Macedonia are trying to learn the reality the hard way. And this does not bring them any benefits. On the contrary. They had enough occasions and events so far to convince themselves that with their anti-European behavior and general attitude towards our country – this in no case does it bring them benefits and distance them from EU membership,” explained the Bulgarian head of state.
This week, the ambassador of North Macedonia in Sofia was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of recent statements by politicians from the neighboring country about Bulgaria, supported by President Stevo Pendarovski. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry criticized the attempt to involve bilateral relations in the internal political debate in the Republic of North Macedonia, including in the context of the election campaign conducted there.
