Radboud University Medical Center Receives NWO Open Science Grants for Cognitive Testing and DNA Analysis

28 december 2023

The Radboud university medical center has two NWO Open Science Grants received. Both Rogier Kievit and Peter-Bram ‘t Hoen are now starting their open science projects. Kievit focuses on the development and validation of a set for testing cognitive skills. ‘t Hoen focuses on open science in large-scale DNA analysis.

Rogier Kievit: open science in abstract reasoning

Abstract reasoning is the ability to solve abstract, novel problems that do not depend on specific knowledge. Individual differences in this skill predict important outcomes such as school success, longevity, career development, and physical and mental health. However, standard tests of this skill such as the Raven’s Matrices and the Cattell Culture Fair test are copyrighted and expensive, making them inaccessible to resource-poor countries and laboratories. With this Open Science project, the researchers aim to develop, validate and make available to the global community an effectively unlimited set of matrix reasoning items.”

Peter-Bram ‘t Hoen: open science in large-scale DNA analysis

Peter-Bram ‘t Hoen and colleagues stimulate Open Science in the -omics field, which involves large-scale analyzes of DNA, proteins and metabolites, by developing the FAIR Data Cube (FDCube). The FDCube includes software and services that help researchers at various stages of the Research Data Life Cycle develop computer-readable metadata; (ii) making -omics data findable and accessible and facilitating analysis and integration of -omics data from different sources. Our proposal aims to increase adoption of the FDCube through the harmonization of metadata schemas, the delivery of a production version and the development of promotional and training materials.

About the NWO Open Science Fund

The Open Science Fund was launched by NWO in 2020 to give an impetus to the recognition and appreciation of open science. In the first round, 26 projects were awarded funding in the broad field of open science. In the second round in 2023, a total of 60 projects were subsidized, divided into two packages (30 in the first package earlier this year and 30 in this second package).
