American police said, on Saturday evening, that the person who shot and killed 3 people before committing suicide inside a store in Jacksonville, Florida, committed his crime with racial motives and hated blacks.
Shooting details
The shooting occurred inside a Dollar General retail store in a predominantly black neighborhood in Jacksonville, Florida. A masked white man entered the store and fired a Glock and an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle. At least one of these two weapons bore a swastika sign. The gunman was wearing a bulletproof vest, according to the Associated Press. The gunman killed 3 black people, two men and a woman, in the store before committing suicide. The suspect was seen walking around the campus of nearby Edward University, where he was walking wearing a bulletproof vest and mask.
“hates black people”
“He (the gunman) targeted a certain group of people and those were black people. Those are the ones he said he wanted to kill. That’s very clear,” Jacksonville Police Chief TK Waters said at a news conference.
He added that messages left by the white gunman, who was in his 20s, “detail his disgusting ideology of hate”.
The writings led investigators to believe that the man committed his crime because of the fifth anniversary of another gunman who opened fire during a video game tournament in Jacksonville, killing two people before killing himself.
Reuters quoted Waters as saying that the perpetrator hated black people.
He said the authorities believed the perpetrator acted on his own, as there was no evidence to show he was part of a larger group.
Briefing Biden
The White House responded to the shooting in Florida.
He said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting at the store in Jacksonville, according to Reuters.
The US President was also briefed on all the shootings that the country witnessed during the past 24 hours.
