Racist insults interrupt virtual funeral of Calvin Coolidge, Phoenix civil rights icon – Telemundo Phoenix / Tucson

PHOENIX- The Phoenix Police Department and the FBI are investigating after a virtual funeral for civil rights icon and city leader Calvin Coolidge Goode was interrupted Tuesday by hackers yelling racist slurs.

Mayor Kate Gallego confirmed the investigation on Twitter, saying the city does not tolerate hate crimes.

Goode died on December 23 of an illness not related to COVID-19. He was 93 years old.

Goode was Phoenix’s second black city councilman and longest-serving elected official in its history, serving on the Phoenix City Council from January 2, 1972 to January 3, 1994, including as deputy mayor in 1974 and 1984.

Alberto Pimienta has the information.

Goode spent his time fighting to improve the quality of life in Phoenix for low-income black residents long after his last days on the council. He retired in 1994 but continued to advocate for equal opportunity, affordable housing, and education through multiple organizations.

Gallego was speaking about the legacy Goode had left in Phoenix, when a man was heard swearing at his comments about half an hour into the virtual service, KTAR-TV reported.

An online petition started by students asking the university to withdraw Duhé’s job offer garnered nearly 4,000 signatures.

The African Methodist Episcopal Church of Historic Tanner Chapel hosted the broadcast on their Facebook page, with family, city officials and friends speaking through Zoom. The church resumed the memorial on a new broadcast.
