The encounter between Valencia and Real Madrid was the scene of racist insults towards Los Blancos’ Brazilian star Vinicius. Since then, voices have multiplied to try to see some form of progress in possibly the greatest scourge of soccer.
That of CF Montreal head coach Hernán Losada was also added to this list on Tuesday morning. When he was called upon to comment on the situation that occurred on Sunday at the Mestalla stadium in Valencia, the Impact driver allowed himself to philosophize on the subject.
“First, Xavi said something that I would like to repeat: ‘we are human. Before being a soccer player or a celebrity, we are humans,’” Losada said in English, as he wanted to make sure he weighed his every word.
Now that it’s happening in a soccer stadium, we’re talking about it. But these kinds of events also happen in schools, on the streets and in many other places that don’t attract as much attention as they do now with Vinicius.

Throughout the match, the stadium hammered out the word: ” mono (monkey in Spanish) which prompted the referee to temporarily stop the match around the 70e minute of play to trigger the protocol against racism.
At the very end of stoppage time, the Real Madrid winger was shown a red card in the uproar. The stadium then resumed communion “monkey, monkey”, according to Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti after the expulsion of Vinicius.
The Italian technician refused to talk about the game after the encounter and has since castigated the lack of effort to turn things around. “We started making them [les critiques] a long time ago, and nothing has changed. After the convictions, we must act. And so far, no one has acted,” he added at a press conference.
An observation shared by his counterpart from CF Montreal.
“All together, we must fight the [racisme] in all its forms. We are all people with rights and that shouldn’t happen. Neither in stadiums nor anywhere else in the world,” Losada insisted.
A situation which certainly took place in Valencia this weekend, but which is far from being an isolated case in professional soccer.
