Racism in everyday life in Australia

A FECCA (Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia) report, commissioned by the Australian Human Rights Commission, revealed many stories of racism and discrimination across the country.

I have been a healthcare worker for 10 years and have experienced racism in many forms, including racial slurs, and some did not want to be treated by me.

An Anti-Racism Framework: Experiences and Perspectives of Multicultural Australia is the name of the report that FECCA will deliver to the Australian Human Rights Commission, based on hundreds of interviews conducted across the country.

The former president of FECCA Carlo Carli tells our microphones how discrimination occurs both among colleagues, among users of services but also in “the structures of society: schools, health centers, work, government”.

There is a “pact of silence” that must be broken, according to Carli, who denounces the “fake propaganda that we are not a racist country”.

We need to ensure that people can talk about discrimination, but also make people understand what racism means.
