Coca Cola joins the boycott of Facebook and other social media. The decision to suspend advertising on all platforms for at least thirty days, announced by Coca Cola, is part of the ‘Stop Hate for Profit’ campaign which other large companies have already joined.
The accusation against Facebook and other social networks such as Twitter and Instagram is that of not doing enough to counter racism and the presence of discriminatory content on their platforms. The stop to advertising will start from July 1st. “There is no room for racism in the world and there is no room for racism on social media. Coca Cola Company will suspend paid advertising on all social platforms globally for at least 30 days,” is the announcement made in a statement by James Quincey, Chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company.
Facebook also spoke through a spokesman about the suspension of advertising by some large companies: “We invest billions of dollars every year to keep our community safe and we constantly work with external experts to review and update our policies. We have submitted to a civil rights audit and we have banned 250 white supremacy organizations from Facebook and Instagram, “he notes in a statement. “The investments we made in Artificial Intelligence allow us to identify almost 90% of the hate speeches we intervene on before users report them to us, while a recent report from the European Union found that Facebook has examined multiple reports of hate speech in 24 hours compared to Twitter and YouTube. We know – the Fb spokesman concludes – that we still have a lot of work to do and we will continue to collaborate with civil rights groups, Garm and other experts to develop even more tools, technologies and policies to continue this fight. “
