There are no grays in this Gustavo Racing. Coasts. It’s love or hate. It’s going from zero to 100 and braking again suddenly in the first corner. It is, in reality, all or nothing for the Copa Sudamericana. The risk is high, but assumed a long time ago. It will be a 100% results-oriented year for the Academy. If he wins the long-awaited international title (he is two games away) it will be a 2024 that will go down in history. Otherwise, and despite the fact that the technician surely thinks otherwise, it will end up being a complete failure.
A substitute team but with heavy names
At the local level, Racing was not close to fighting any of the three fronts and did not consolidate a game idea in 10 months. Now, from behind, the chance to enter the Libertadores 2025 begins to be played if they do not manage to win the Sudamericana. On Sunday, against Banfield, he threatened with a recovery that barely lasted four minutes (from Quirós’ goal to Sepúlveda’s equalizer). He missed, once again, a chance against a team that had never turned a result around this year.
It is completely true that Racing’s sights are set on Thursday’s return against Corinthians, where a win will take them to the final. That’s why presented to Banfield a team made up of all substitutes, although heavy on names. Cambeses, Mura, Sigali, Colombo, Zuculin, Baltasar, Carbonero, Vietto… But if the starters struggled all year in the domestic tournaments, there was nowhere to hold on to see a superior version of the Academy.
Racing’s problems in the aerial game
It was a slow game. In the first half, which ended goalless, Costas’ team had already shown serious problems in the aerial game. Miraculously, Garate, entering from the far post, did not make it 1-0. Carbonero, on the counterattack, could have opened the scoring. But Racing, from highest to lowest, ended up looking like a tired, apathetic team, with little reaction. He didn’t even gain strength when Quirós found the ball in the six-yard box to put his team ahead. Quickly, Sepúlveda tied it with a header entering alone and then, a pirouette by Rodríguez after a terrible start by Cambeses left Taladro the winner.
The defeat doesn’t hurt Racing because it thinks about the Sudamericana. It is convenient for you, in the cabotage format, to look the other way…
