Racing Legend Gil de Ferrán Dies After Testing Car with Son, Holds CART Speed Record

Gil de Ferrán, 56 years old and holder of the track speed record in the CART series, with a lap at 241.428 miles (388.54 kilometers) per hour, was testing a car accompanied by his even younger son Luke, when he stopped the car stating that he was not feeling well, and was transported to a hospital, but ended up dying.

Born on November 11, 1967 in Paris, but naturalized Brazilian, Gil de Ferrán was currently a consultant for the McLaren team, having started his career in British Formula 3, later winning, in the United States, seven CART races and five IndyCar races, between 1995 and 2003.

Ferrán won two CART titles, in 2000 and 2001, and 50 podiums as a driver for the Penske team, with his greatest achievement occurring in 2003, when he won the Indianapolis 500, in what was his fourth and last participation, in a final race in which he beat his compatriot and teammate Hélio Castroneves at the finish line.

“Indycar is deeply saddened by the death of two-time champion and racing legend Gil de Ferrán”, says Formula I
