At the “North German Deer Calling Championships” near Röbel/Müritz, seven men and, for the first time, a woman will be competing on Sunday. Whoever can best imitate three special sounds in the Bollewick stone barn can call themselves Northern Germany’s best deer caller.

According to the organizer, all eight participants are hunters and come from five different federal states – in addition to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, also from Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Brandenburg. By imitating the rutting cries or quieter calls of old deer, they can lure animals out of cover. The main focus is on counting deer; older animals are also often shot.

The “North German Deer Calling Championships” begin at 3 p.m. and are taking place for the 16th time as part of the “Nature, Game, Fish” trade fair. “We are expecting around 5,000 visitors,” says Roland Auzinger, chairman of the Müritz hunting association, which is organizing the trade fair and the championship.
