Racing defeats Cruzeiro and wins the South American Cup

Assumption. Racing Club ended a 36-year drought. With a solid performance in all its lines, the Argentine team defeated Cruzeiro 3-1 on Saturday and won the Copa Sudamericana for the first time, its first international title since 1988.

Goals in the first half from Gastón Martirena and Adrián “Maravilla” Martínez, and one more from Roger Martínez in added time, allowed the Academy to end the long period without international celebrations.

The last time had been in the 1988 Super Cup — the precursor to the Sudamericana — precisely against Cruzeiro. Their current coach Gustavo Costas was part of that team.

Racing, part of the select group of the big five of Argentine soccer, was the first three-time champion of his country (between 1949 and 1951), the first Argentine champion of the Copa Libertadores (1967) and also of the Intercontinental Cup (1967), but What followed was a long drought.

They were relegated in the early 80s, went 35 years without celebrating a local title and took 32 years to play in a continental final again. Until at the La Nueva Olla stadium in Asunción, with the majority support of his fans, he once again shouted champion.

In addition to getting their ticket to the next Copa Libertadores, Avellaneda’s team pocketed 6 million dollars as a prize, while Cruzeiro took 2 million.

Racing came out to impose conditions in the final from the beginning and was about to open the scoring after three minutes with a goal from Gastón Martirena, which was invalidated after the VAR review due to a prior offside by Maximiliano Salas.

At 15, Martirena had revenge and scored with a cross-shot from the right wing that surprised goalkeeper Cassio and hit the far post.

The Uruguayan full-back had already been key in the quarterfinals and semifinals with goals against Athletico Paranaense and Corinthians.

At 20, Racing increased the difference after a cross from Salas, which Adrián Martínez finished in the area against the weak defense of defender Lucas Villalba.

Martínez reached 10 goals in the current edition of the Copa Sudamericana and finished as the top scorer. Racing’s 32 scores in the tournament constitute a record in the history of the competition.

Cruzeiro did not achieve its first goal until the half hour mark, when Kaio Jorge deflected a cross in the area.

Right after came the hydration break due to the thermal sensation of 40 degrees Celsius with which the match was played in Asunción.

After the arrest, Cruzeiro coach Fernando Diniz – Libertadores champion last year with Fluminense – ordered his team with the aim of transferring possession of the ball in approaches to the rival area.

Before the break, Villalba finished off a corner kick for Cruzeiro’s first shot on goal in the match.

The Brazilian team scored in the 53rd minute through Kaio Jorge, who finished a good team play after a double shot inside the area.

Racing delayed its lines in search of defending the result and had a notable display from its defenders Santiago Sosa, Marco Di Cesare and Agustín García Basso.

Cruzeiro, led by Matheus Henrique and Matheus Pereira, tried to get the tie, but could not beat Racing’s solid defense.

In stoppage time, with the Brazilian team playing in attack, Roger Martínez completed a counterattack and sealed the result.
