On Saturday, three African-American people were shot and killed at a Dollar General Store in the city of Jacksonville, Florida.

Local police have named the perpetrator as Ryan Christopher Palmeter.

The 21-year-old lived with his parents in a suburb of Jacksonville and had no criminal background, says Sheriff TK Waters in a press conference Sunday.

Sent an SMS to the father

Outside the store, Palmeter fired eleven shots at Angela Michelle Carr, 52, who was sitting in her car, before entering the store and killing Anolt Joseph Laguerre Jr. (19) and Gerrald Gallion (29).

He then texted his father asking him to check his bedroom. There, the parents found a will and a suicide note.

When the police arrived at the scene, they heard another shot before finding the perpetrator dead.

Swastika drawn on the weapon

According to the police, the murders were racially motivated. Palmeter used racial slurs and had drawn several swastikas on his weapon, according to police.

He is also said to have left behind several manifestos. The FBI is investigating the shooting as a hate crime.

– To put it simply, he hated black people, the sheriff said.

According to witnesses, the 21-year-old first tried to get into the local and historically black university Edward Waters University. When that didn’t work, he instead went to Dollar General, which was nearby, writes NTB.

The 21-year-old is said to have also let several people out of the store before he opened fire.

– We don’t know why. Some of them were white, but from what I’ve been told, some of them weren’t.

– No red flags

Palmeter was involuntarily arrested for 72 hours in a psychiatric unit in 2017. The sheriff still believes he was sane during the shooting incident on Saturday.

– He knew what he was doing. It is disappointing that someone would go to such lengths to hurt someone else.

The weapons he was carrying, a handgun and a semi-automatic rifle, were both purchased earlier this year.

– There was nothing we could have done to have stopped him from obtaining these legally. There were no red flags, Walters stated.

The killing is the latest case of American gun violence motivated by racist ideology. In 2012, a similar attack occurred at a supermarket in New York, and in 2019, 20 people were killed in a mass shooting at a shopping mall in Texas.

I 2021 President Joe Biden’s security team reported that “ethnically motivated violent extremists,” especially those who “promote white supremacy,” are one of the most persistent and deadly threats in the country.

So far, there have been 473 mass shootings mass shootings The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed, not including the shooter. in the United States this year, according to Gun Violence Archive.

President Joe Biden has condemned the shooting and sent his condolences to the victims’ families.

– We must refuse to live in a country where black families who go to the store live in fear of being shot because of their skin color.
