Hiker Einar Marthinussen got a depressing sight when he was going for a Sunday walk up a popular hiking trail with his grandson last Sunday.
The trail runs from Bergen waterworks along the Mulelven up to the dam in Skredderdalen in Bergen.
Very many, both large and small, use the trail on the way to and from Sandviksfjellet, writes Bergensavisen, who first mentioned the case. Avisa has spoken to several people who react to the condition of the path.
–
– Dangerous
Marthinussen believes that the path has become a “terrible pile of stones”.
– I was completely appalled at how devastated the trail is now. In addition, there are several large openings towards the Mulelven in the fence along the path. Toddlers can simply fall out – it is life threatening, he tells Dagbladet.
The man from Bergen says that he has a close relationship with the trail when he spent his childhood in the area.
– Poorly drained
– What has happened in recent years is that the trail is poorly drained, thus it becomes like a river bed due to heavy rainfall in Bergen, he says and continues:
– Down the mountain road, which the trail ends in, it has clean stone and gravel for many years. So many have been aware of it for a long time.
Marthinussen is a member of Bergen Skog- og Træplantingsselskap – and believes that they have fought for several years for more funds to maintain the area.
– The trail is very popular and it is very sad that Bergen municipality is not willing to maintain it, he says.
– Not top quality
Dagbladet has been in contact with city mountain manager Jan Robert Brandsdal in Bergen municipality, who refers to an answer given to BA.
To the newspaper, he says that the Bergen Water and Urban Environment Agency is working to look at the possibility of improving the hiking trail in connection with the rehabilitation of the dam in Skredderdalen 2023.
He admits that the trail is not of top quality.
– It is especially the washing out of gravel that is a problem in this steep part, and the result is that it can be challenging to travel here. The hiking trail can be demanding for both small and large feet. We would recommend everyone to stand up for themselves to the best of their ability and with caution, he says.
After Dagbladet got in touch, Kristin Madsen Klokkeide, section leader for the Nature and Environmental Administration section in Bergen municipality, writes in an SMS that they will take an extra inspection of the trail.
– I read the quotes from the hiker, and think that we should take an extra inspection to see if there are particularly vulnerable points that should be marked or secured in some way, or if we should put up a sign about alternative access, pending improvements , she writes.
