Race to Planet Mars, Japan Ready to Overtake America and China

JAKARTA – The race to the planet Mars is heating up. Now it’s Japan’s turn to announce that they will soon go to Mars and bring material or samples from the red planet back to Earth in 2029. The mission to bring Mars material is expected to be a clue to the origin of Mars and the possibility of life on the planet.

In an official statement, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), plans to launch a spacecraft that will depart for Mars in 2024. Then five years later the spacecraft will take as much as 10 grams of samples on Mars and bring them back to Earth in the following year. 2029.

This timeline makes Japan step ahead of China and the United States. Interestingly, Japan actually started this mission to Mars later than China and America.

It is known that NASA itself is preparing a plan to go to Mars in 2031. To reach Mars and bring samples to Earth, NASA is cooperating with the European Space Agency in early 2031. While China is a year earlier targeted at 2030.

Yasuhiro Kawakatsu from JAXA said 10 grams of material to be taken is granular material on the Moon on Mars or Phobos. However, the material taken will depend on the material they will find while in Phobos.

Tomohiro Usui, professor at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, said the soil on Phobos was likely a mixture of material from the moon itself and material from Mars scattered by sandstorms. He said the process of collecting material or samples present on Phobos could provide a greater chance of obtaining possible traces of life from Mars than obtaining soil from a single location on Mars, he said.

Meanwhile, JAXA scientists say, every form of life that may have originated from Mars will die due to the harsh solar and cosmic radiation on Phobos.

The NASA and European Space Agency missions are focusing on potential life forms and the evolution of the Jezero crater area, which is believed to be an ancient lake.
