In Spain, people are working hard to make roads free of snow as quickly as possible. The weather forecasts assume a temperature drop to -12 degrees in the coming days, which will turn the snow on the roads into ice.
Top priority for the Spanish government is to reopen routes to areas badly hit by storm Filomena. Special truck convoys are under police escort to deliver 300,000 corona vaccines to regional health authorities.
Spanish Transport Minister Abalos says corridors have been opened to deliver the vaccines and also food supplies. He emphasizes that the corona vaccines will arrive at their destination today as planned so that the vaccination campaign that started at the end of December is not interrupted.
Leger also helps
Soldiers have been deployed to make main roads passable again. A special emergency unit of the army helped clear snow from the hospitals and the airport in Madrid. The accumulated snow had made the hospitals inaccessible for patients, staff and supplies.
On Saturday evening, five hundred Spaniards had to spend the night in sports centers after being trapped by heavy snow. In Madrid, one of the worst affected areas, about 50 centimeters of snow fell between Friday evening and Saturday.
