TRIBUN-BALI.COM, JEMBRANA – Two cows belonging to residents in the Banyubiru Village area, Negara District, Jembrana and in other locations suddenly died with positive symptoms of rabies last week.
Allegedly, the four-legged cattle were previously attacked by rabid dogs.
Meanwhile, from the results of laboratory checks at BBVet Denpasar, the cow brain sample was also positive for rabies. This means that cases of rabies are not only transmitted from rabies-infecting animals (HPR) to HPR. But cows are also infected due to HPR attacks.

On the other hand, owners of cattle infected with rabies are also given anti-rabies vaccine (VAR) as an anticipation and treatment for the transmission of positive cases of rabies to humans in Jembrana.
“Until now (July) there have been 52 cases. The last two cases were a resident’s cow that died with symptoms of rabies,” said Head of the Veterinary Public Health Division at the Jembrana Agriculture and Food Service, I Wayan Widarsa, Monday (17/7/2023) .

Wiarsa said, previously there were reports from residents that his cow had a change in behavior and refused to eat.
Cows also drool excessively, and not as usual. Residents then contacted the team in the district for inspection.
The owner of the cow was advised not to sell the cow and to monitor it for 14 days. But on the same day it was reported, the cow turned out to be dead.

He continued, from the residents’ reports, officers finally took brain samples to be tested at the Denpasar BBVet laboratory.
As a result, the cow’s brain sample was positive for rabies.
“The results (laboratory) are positive. But there is no history of biting people,” he said.

Until now, he said, there was no information on when the resident’s livestock had been attacked by HPR positive for rabies. However, what is clear is that the cow was allegedly attacked by an animal with a positive status for rabies.
This is because the symptoms are the same as those for HPR rabies, namely the mouth salivates excessively, the cow often acts aggressively or goes berserk and then dies.
“The possibility of being bitten by a dog is positive. The estimate is around 3-4 weeks before the cow dies,” he said.
