BUNTOK-Residents of South Barito (Barsel) and East Barito (Bartim) districts need to be aware of the mad dog terror. The bites of dogs infected with the rabies virus have caused fatalities. This condition prompted the Barsel Regency Government to establish a rabies extraordinary event (KLB) status.
Head of the Barsel Health Service (Dinkes) Dr. Daryomo Sukistomo said the rabies case in Barsel has the status of an outbreak, so vigilance against the threat of rabies is still necessary.
“Residents of Barsels must continue to prioritize vigilance from dog bites which are feared to transmit rabies. Until now, the Health Office together with related agencies continue to convey socialization to the community, “said Dr. Daryomo.
His party appealed to residents not to underestimate the bites of dogs or other pets that have the potential to transmit the rabies virus. The first step that needs to be taken is to immediately go to the nearest health center or hospital to get medical action.
In addition, residents who have dogs are encouraged to bring their pets to the relevant agency to get rabies vaccine services.
“The point is not only bite victims, don’t think of dog bites as normal, as well as residents who have pets, it’s best to coordinate with relevant parties so that pets are given a rabies vaccine.
In the near future we will conduct socialization in three sub-districts to reduce the surge in rabies cases,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) for Barsel, Huzaimah, said that until now the status of the rabies outbreak has not been revoked, aka it is still valid. From the data from the Health Office, there were two residents who had become victims and died, namely in Dusun Utara and Gunung Buntang Awai Districts. Even so far, every month there are always cases of rabies.
“Until now the Barsel Regency Government has not revoked the status of the outbreak, because every month there are still cases of bites, the latest has claimed two lives in two sub-districts, the Health Office continues to work to suppress rabies cases,” explained Huzaimah.
To achieve this goal, explained Huzaimah, the Barsel Health Office, in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Service, went down to the field to vaccinate residents’ pet dogs, especially in the outbreak areas, namely Dusun Selatan, Gunung Bintang Awai, and Dusun Utara sub-districts.
“The point is we are working on prevention together with related agencies, in fact we have given all the VAR (anti-rabies vaccine), thank God we have bought the vaccine ourselves with the help of the regional government, because previously vaccine stocks depended on the center,” he said.
Separately, the Director of Tamiang Layang Hospital, Dr. Vinny Safari, confirmed the patient who died because he was suspected of being infected with the rabies virus. According to him, yesterday the hospital together with the local health office held a meeting to follow up and investigate the case.
“It should be noted that the incubation period for rabies ranges from two to eighteen weeks, meaning that the symptoms of rabies are only felt by patients ranging from two weeks to four months after being bitten by an animal infected with rabies,” commented Dr. Vinny.
He further said, after being bitten by a pet (dog/cat/monkey), immediately clean the bite wound using detergent or immediately go to the nearest health facility to get medical services.
The beautiful woman added that not only bites, animal scratch marks can also transmit rabies.
“Vaccines will not be useful if the rabies virus has spread in the body, so we urge the public to be more vigilant,” said Dr. Vinny Safari.
He explained that the rabies virus, which is transmitted to humans, was not immediately detected.
Symptoms will appear if the virus has spread and reached the central nervous system or brain.
The speed of spread of the virus from the bite/scratch site to the brain averages 12-24 mm per day. “The closer the bite site is to the brain, the faster it will spread and the quicker the symptoms will appear. If the virus reaches the brain, it can be fatal,” he said.
Meanwhile, Head of the Disease Prevention and Control Division at the Central Kalimantan Health Service (Dinkes) Riza Syahputra added that cases of rabid dog bites or rabies in several regions in Indonesia were in the spotlight. Management and prevention of rabies cases continues to be carried out by the government, so that many similar cases do not occur.
“We all know, in several areas there is an increase in cases of rabies, one of which is in the province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), in Central Kalimantan there are also several cases of bites and rabies, but not significant,” said Riza when interviewed by the Central Kalimantan Post, Tuesday (27 /6).
Please note, rabies or mad dog disease is an acute infectious disease that attacks the central nervous system in humans and warm-blooded animals, caused by the rabies virus, transmitted through the saliva of (dogs, cats, monkeys) affected by rabies, through bites or open wounds.
“Dogs are the main source of infection, apart from cats and monkeys. Abroad, apart from these three animals, the rabies virus can also be transmitted through the bites of animals such as wolves, bats, skunks and raccoons,” explained Riza.
He added that most cases of rabies in Central Kalimantan were caused by pet bites that were not handled properly by their owners, so they randomly attack humans. (is)
