There are many dreams that Indonesia wants to achieve in 2030. One of them is “Rabies-Free Indonesia” which was proclaimed by the Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo on 8 October 2021. However, until now, only eight provinces in Indonesia have rabies-free status.

This was stated by drh. Palestin, M.Imun, who is a teaching staff at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Wijaya Kusuma University Surabaya (UWKS FKH) as well as owner K&P Clinic Surabaya. Check out the full presentation, come on!

1. The majority of provinces with rabies-free status are located on the island of Java

To date, only eight provinces in Indonesia have been declared free of rabies, namely the Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung, DKI Jakarta, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, West Papua and Papua.

“The others (with status) are endemic. Especially in East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara and West Kalimantan, there are lots of cases,” explained drh. Palestine.

According to him, one of the determinants of rabies-free status is the owner’s awareness of the importance of vaccinating their pets. This factor makes the environment protected from the rabies virus.

Dogs can be given the rabies vaccine from the age of 16 weeks or four months, then repeated once a year (annual). According to Dr. Palestine, in areas with rabies-free status, the rabies vaccine is not included in the core vaccination, but is a companion vaccination.

“In endemic areas, for example in NTT, Bali or West Kalimantan, the rabies vaccine is mandatory. It cannot be (missed),” he said.

For information, which includes the core vaccination in dogs is distemper, parvovirushepatitis, and parainfluenza. Meanwhile, what includes the core vaccinations in cats is panleukopenia and calicivirus.

3. How much does rabies vaccination cost in dogs?

If you want to give the rabies vaccine to your dog independently, how much does it cost to prepare? According to Dr. Palestine, the cost is not too expensive, ranging from IDR 100 thousand to IDR 200 thousand. This is the price for private veterinary clinics, it may be different for veterinary centers (puskeswan).

“However, in endemic areas, I’m sure it’s a routine activity of the related agencies and (it’s) free of charge. We in East Java also often provide free rabies vaccines,” he said.
