JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TV – The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkes RI) reports that there have been 31,113 cases of bites by rabies-transmitting animals (GHPR) throughout 2023 in Indonesia, 11 of whom died.
In its official release, the Ministry of Health stated that there had been 23,211 cases of bites that had received the anti-rabies vaccine.
The rabies situation in Indonesia from 2020 to April 2023, an average of 82,634 bite cases per year, then almost 57,000 people who were given the anti-rabies vaccine.

Currently there are 25 provinces that are endemic to rabies, but only 8 provinces are free of rabies, namely the Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung, DKI Jakarta, Central Java, DI Yogyakarta, East Java, West Papua and Papua.
Meanwhile, two regions have declared rabies extraordinary event (KLB) status, namely Sikka District, and South Central Timor (TTS) District, East Nusa Tenggara.
Dr. Imran Pambudi, Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases, said that rabies is still a big challenge in Indonesia.
“Rabies is a big challenge in Indonesia because in the last three years there have been an average of more than 80,000 cases of bites from rabid animals a year and an average of 68 people have died,” said Dr. Imran, Friday (2/6) from the release received Kompas.tv.

Throughout 2023, the Ministry of Health has procured 241,700 vials of vaccine for humans and 1,650 vials of serum.
