Brooklyn commuters face temporary R train service changes this January due to scheduled maintenance by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The partial suspension will impact service for two consecutive weekends, beginning friday, January 3rd, and continuing through Monday, January 6th, and again from January 10th to 13th.
The MTA has announced that the affected section of the R line, between 36th Street and Bay Ridge–95th Street, will experience service interruptions from 11:30 PM on friday evenings to 5:00 AM on Monday mornings. During these periods, the agency will be conducting crucial structural maintenance work.
Free Shuttle Buses and Alternative Routes
To mitigate the inconvenience, the MTA will provide free shuttle bus service between 36th Street and Bay Ridge–95th Street throughout the affected weekends. Though, riders are encouraged to explore alternative travel options to minimize delays.
- For 45th Street and 53rd Street stations: Utilize the Coney Island-bound N train or the free shuttle buses.
- For 59th Street station: Take the N train or the free shuttle buses. The MTA notes that transfers between trains and buses are available at 36th Street (for N and R trains) and 59th street (for the N train).
- Late-night travel alternatives: Consider the N train or nearby 2 or 3 train stops at Whitehall Street–South Ferry,Court Street,and Jay Street–MetroTech.
- For dekalb Avenue station: Use the Q train or the late-night D or N trains.
- For service between Atlantic Avenue and 36th Street: Take the D train or the Coney Island-bound N train, with transfers available at Atlantic Avenue (2, 3, D, N, and Q trains) and 36th Street (D and N trains).
The MTA advises passengers to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra travel time during these service disruptions. Regular updates will be provided through the MTAS official channels.
This planned maintenance is part of the MTA’s ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and reliability of the New York city subway system. The agency emphasizes the importance of these upgrades for the long-term health of the infrastructure.
