R. Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison in New York, and it was clear to the court that the singer could remain a danger to minors even after his release. That’s why the 55-year-old has to undergo sex therapy and can never be alone with anyone under the age of 18 again.
According to TMZ, the court documents give specific conditions for R. Kelly. He must inform people living with him of his sex offender status and must not have contact with minors. Exception: The court allows meeting family members under the age of 18 or in a “therapeutic” setting – but with strict conditions.
“Responsible adult” must be present
First, R. Kelly’s parole officer must agree to the encounter. A “responsible adult” must then be present on site – this also applies, by the way, if the singer comes into contact with other sex offenders. But the rules could become even stricter.
R. Kelly is also being charged in the states of Illinois and Minnesota. A trial in Chicago could begin as early as August. He is said to have become engaged to one of his abuse victims.
Singer was long considered untouchable
It’s been a long time since the first allegations against the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer. In 2008 he was accused of possessing images showing severe child sexual abuse. He was acquitted, his career suffered a small tear – but no more.
Finally, a documentary series brought down the Bard. “Surviving R. Kelly” told in 2019 about the numerous allegations against him – millions of records sold, several Grammys and music awards couldn’t help anymore. R. Kelly disappeared from Spotify, radio stations stopped playing his songs and his music label also distanced itself from him. To this day, he denies the allegations.
