Singer R Kelly is to remain in prison pending trial. His sixth request to be released on bail was rejected by the court on Tuesday. Kelly is suspected of sexual abuse, among other things.
Kelly is stuck at the Chicago Metropolitan Correctional Center, awaiting trial. According to the court, there is “clear and compelling evidence” that Kelly poses a potential danger to the community and that he might flee if given the opportunity.
R. Kelly’s lawyers asked for his release because, according to them, he has not been able to prepare for his trial for six months. He has not seen his lawyers since visiting detainees was banned due to the corona virus. Because Kelly is illiterate, according to his lawyers, he cannot prepare for the trial without personal contact.
It is the sixth time that Kelly’s request for bail has been denied. Previous rejected requests were filed because Kelly is said to be at risk from the coronavirus. He would also be mistreated by fellow prisoners.
