R. Kelly no longer has additional permanent security in the prison. That measure was previously introduced to prevent the singer from taking his own life. US prosecutors say on Tuesday that the measure is no longer necessary, reports Reuters.
According to the statement of the officers, the measure was lifted Kelly after a medical examination. Such an investigation was also conducted before it was decided that he should be closely monitored. The 55-year-old singer was sentenced to 30 years in prison last week.
The extra security at Kelly’s cell was lifted Tuesday morning. Kelly’s lawyer had previously announced that the artist had filed a complaint, because he himself does not claim to be suicidal. Despite the cessation of the measure, Kelly wants to continue that charge, according to his lawyer. According to Kelly, the extra security was only put in place because he is famous.
Kelly was found guilty last year of, among other things, leading an organization that aimed to abuse women and girls. The I Believe I Can Flysinger has been accused of sexual misconduct for years. Kelly has always denied all allegations dating back to the 1990s.
