Quote500: Adriaan ‘Mollie’ Mol sees half his fortune go up in smoke

The annual list of the 500 richest Dutch is back, with many Brabanders. Omroep Brabant browsed the Quote500 and selected the most impressive ones for you.

First, bad news for Breda’s Adriaan Mol, from the payment company Mollie. Of the five hundred, it is the biggest decline this year. He saw almost half (1.3 billion) of his assets go up in smoke, because investors valued Mollie much lower. This drops him to 38th place.

Last year’s biggest decline was Peter Bijvelds, CEO of the Ebusco bus company from Deurne. This year, however, it’s not even on the list. The company has not been doing well for some time. A share was worth 23 euros three years ago; that is now less than 2 euros.

Jumbo in bad weather
Old acquaintances on the list include Ben Mandemakers and the Van Eerd family. Although the former is 68 years old, he is still the day-to-day manager of his kitchen empire. The Jumbo Van Eerd siblings now own a third of the shares, which puts them in tenth place on the list. Anyway, the supermarket chain is not doing so well. Jumbo’s net profit has fallen to 22 million euros, and it was five times more at one time.

There are more children who inherited well. The role of Wim van der Leegte, the entrepreneur who died last year and made VDL Eindhoven so great, has been filled by his three children. Together they are worth around 2.5 billion euros. And it wouldn’t be a family business if they weren’t all still working there. The top 20 is closed by Rituals creator Raymond Cloosterman. Although not from Brabander, Jumbo’s husband is a Colette Cloosterman-Van Eerd scion. Rituals seems to be breaking the magical barrier of turnover of 2 billion this year.

No harm done
And we haven’t even gotten to all the billions yet. Not much is known about real estate owner Frank Zweegers, but the Quote got a better look at his finances and changed his estimated fortune positively to 1.6 billion. Things are also going well with the former banker Wiet Pot from Eindhoven. His interest in the Amsterdam stock exchange IMC is still not doing him any harm.

Do you know the Deurne entrepreneur Robert van der Wallen? As well as being the CEO of PSV, he is also the man behind the promotion of supermarket savings. His assets (1.2 billion euros) remained the same, but fell to position 48.

Bacon brothers
As soon as we reach the millionaires we see the old driver Erik van Loon from Eersel. At the meat processor Van Loon in Son, no one wanted to talk to the journalists Quote. But the magazine sees that the company is having a hard time. Costs are rising in the meat industry. Although we see Marc and Addy van Rooi, from the Helmond meat processing, not much lower. De Quote often refer to them as ‘the bacon brothers’. Together they are worth around 460 million euros.

At position 135 we see Frank van Stipdonk from Lieshout. He has been the head of Bladelse Interfood for more than three decades. The dairy company is doing very well. The same applies to BAS from Veghel, a major player in the truck industry. So the brothers Caspar and Bas van Heertum rose 33 places on the Quote500.

Eighties
Pieter and Dirk van der Wegen are also doing well. Their gear factory in Tilburg runs smoothly, increasing their power by a good 16 percent. Together they have about 180 million euros. Finally, we see the eighties Jan and Piet van Kempen again as well. They owe the metal company MCB in Valkenswaard. The Quote has given them a position of 421 with an estimated capital of 160 million euros. And you probably know the Merba cookie factory in Oosterhout. In 2018 we wrote that the brothers Jan and Wim Boerman were left with 84 million euros. That has now amounted to 135 million euros.

But are they just entrepreneurs and real estate executives on that list? Fortunately no. Breda’s musical pride, Tijs Verwest, is even the only DJ on the list this year. With an estimated fortune of 205 million euros, Tiësto shines in place 331.
