Quote 500: never before did the Netherlands have so many billionaires | Money

The anniversary edition of the Quote 500, the rich list of our country, is full of records. To name a few: never before did the Netherlands have so many billionaires (45) and never before did the 500 richest possess so much wealth: 219.6 billion euros. “Real estate and tech, that’s where the big earners are.”

appears today the 25th edition of the Quote 500, the annual banner of the magazine that started in 1996 with the then Quote 100. In that list we found football players such as Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman and Marco van Basten. A quarter of a century later, the big football names are missing. Anyone who now wants to join the company of the richest compatriots must bring at least 110 million euros net. In 1996 the lower limit of 20 million guilders was already sufficient to be mentioned. The only athlete who now comes close to 110 million is Max Verstappen”, says Tom Wouda, compiler of the Quote 500.

The number 1 is again Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken (67), the media-shy heiress of the beer empire. Last year she lost no less than 2 billion due to the corona crisis, but the damage has partly been made up. The assets of the subsidiary of Freddy Heineken increased by 11.6 percent to 13.5 billion. At number 2, at an appropriate distance, is a newcomer in the top 5: project developer Remon Vos (51). The founder of real estate company CTP is building en masse in Eastern Europe and that is doing him no harm. Estimated assets: 5.7 billion, an increase of no less than 216.7 percent compared to 2020. On 3 and 4 are well-known names: Randstad founder Frits Goldschmeding (5.6 billion) and the sisters Gérita and Inge Wessels of the construction company VolkersWessel (4.3 billion). Number 5 is Ralph Sonnenberg, Hunter Douglas’s Luxaflex billionaire (3.6 billion).

Adyen

Striking: in the first eleven on the list are four men who have become rich with the payment company Adyen, with the highest rating for Arnout Schuijff (7, with 3.5 billion). Other well-known billionaires in the top 45: Karel van Eerd (Jumbo), John de Mol, Joop van den Ende, Marcel Boekhoorn, Pieter Zwart (Coolblue) and Jitse Groen (Thuisbezorgd.nl).

Chef Quote 500 Tom Wouda notes that the wealth of the tech and real estate guys in particular has grown enormously. “That’s where the big earners are. These sectors were not affected by corona measures in the past year, often the opposite. We have never had so many rich people in the Netherlands before. The most striking change in the past 25 years has been in the speed at which those abilities are amassed. A fortune is sometimes earned within a few years. We can even welcome three people in their thirties among the billionaires: Adriaan Mol, Robert Vis and Ali Niknam. Good news for them, but you also see that the gap between rich and poor is widening rapidly.”

In the early years, many refusedQuote 500members’ information with the editors, but that situation has changed, according to Wouda. “Most of them are cooperating now. We often get information off the record, but then we know that it is correct. Some call us themselves with the announcement that we have forgotten them, but most of the time it runs loose.”

Top 5

1. Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken
2. Remon Vos
3. Frits Goldschmeding
4. Gerita and Inge Wessels
5. Ralph Sonnenberg

Important

According to Wouda, it is important to keep making the list, especially due to the rapid growth of money. “These people have a lot of power because of their wealth position. What do they do with their money and what does society notice? We have to continue to monitor that.”

What the Quoteeditors have noticed for years: there are again few women in the list and women who have become rich on their own, are already hard to find. Wouda: ,,Of course, ladies have become rich through blood ties or inheritance – we count three in the top 5 alone – but selfmade women have been a rarity for years. It makes us all the happier that Yvonne Swaans is making her comeback. Together with husband Richard Westerhuis, she successfully invested in insurance and real estate. They are in position 269, with a net worth of 250 million.”
