An unusual test for fans of science fiction (and not only).
The cosmos has fascinated humanity throughout the ages. The inhabitants of the Earth wanted to know how the universe works, whether other planets of the solar system are inhabited, what other creatures, besides people, inhabit it. Fiction authors wrote about space exploration, and when cinematography appeared, films about interplanetary travel appeared. In 1902, the first picture on a space theme was published – “Journey to the Moon” by the French experimental director Georges Méliès. Two books served as the basis for the script of the parody tape at once – “From the Cannon to the Moon” by Jules Verne and “The First Men on the Moon” by H. G. Wells. It’s hard to say how much work Méliès had to do to combine the two stories and fit them into 14 minutes of screen time. The plot of the film by modern standards seems simple – an expedition goes to the moon, where it meets with a local tribe of selenites. It was to work on this film that Méliès developed many techniques that were advanced for that time – for example, he used the overlay of frames on top of each other.
