The fifth script of the star duo Smoljak – Svěrák
The well-known couple Ladislav Smoljak and Zdeněk Svěrák were behind the humorous film adaptation of the then housing situation. However, this was not their first collaboration. By the end of 1987 together they made nine feature films. The fifth script written was Ball Lightning.

This proven duo already had a few other successful films behind them at the time of filming Ball Lightning. They started with a comedy about the underdog František Koudelka. Movie Jáchym, throw him in the machine! under the baton of director Oldřich Lipský, it was filmed already in 1974. Just two years later, another of the traditional Czechoslovak films was made, namely the story of evening school student Jiří Kroup. As with the first picture, also with the film Marečka, hand me a pen! there was a collaboration with Oldřich Lipský. Even before writing Ball Lightning, the film Alone in the Forest was made. Then, from 1980, a few more comedies were made. Three Veterans, Senior, Run!, General School or Accumulator 1.
Svěrák and Smoljak were among the most successful pairs of filmmakers. They have ten films to their credit. It should be noted that their work ranks among the highest quality films of the last century on the territory of Czechoslovakia.
Even today’s young generation uses the messages from Ball Lightning
But let’s go back to the movie Ball Lightning. It is interwoven with dozens of funny dialogues and remarks that still resonate with society today.
The phrase “The family is suffocating” became famous. The character Knotko said again in the time of great destruction:
The worst part of it all is that you have to communicate with people you have nothing in common with.
Perhaps everyone remembers Mrs. Jechová’s question:
Cellar, do you have a cellar? And could I see him?
These and many other sentences have become truly iconic.
Smoljak even managed to sneak his last name into the film. And not only to the section with subtitles. His name appears on the drawn plan of the entire event, as one of the participating movers. On the agenda of the Ball Lightning II event. the names of staff members are again written down. However, the next part was never filmed. Even though it was originally planned. But the script was never finished.
Several well-known Smoljak and Svěrak from the Jára Cimrman Theater appear in the film. However, some of the staff members also stood in front of the camera. For example, the cameraman played the role of an extra during the evening celebration.
