Quitting smoking in Stoptober extra motivated by corona

Nijkerk – Do you smoke and want to stop? Then join us in Stoptober. This year we will also see the Stoptober camper in the region Gelderland-Central to mobilize smoking residents to quit smoking. In Gelderland-Midden, 17.4% of residents aged 18 or older smoke. Stoptober gives you support in all kinds of ways to keep up with smoking cessation.

This is your chance

Alderman Harke Dijksterhuis: ‘I recommend all smokers to join Stoptober. This is your chance to stop permanently. The campaign fits in well with the policy of the municipality of Nijkerk. With the Sports and Exercise Agreement and the Lifestyle Agreement, we are encouraging our residents to live a healthy life together with local organizations.’

Strengthen Immune System

A healthy lifestyle (healthy diet, sufficient exercise, sleep and relaxation, quitting smoking and moderating alcohol) can strengthen the immune system in many people within a few weeks and can reduce the risk of a serious course of COVID-19. This seems to be a good weapon in the fight against the corona virus. In addition to, of course, preventing infections by following the corona measures.

Stoptober

The Stoptober motorhome was in Arnhem on the Velperplein on Friday 24 September and at the weekly market in Huissen in the afternoon. Experts provided information about smoking cessation and Stoptober. In recent years, research has shown that this joint way of quitting works. Research by Amsterdam UMC has shown that 74% of the participants successfully complete Stoptober. 50% still don’t smoke after 3 months and 25% are still smoke-free after a year. That percentage is 5x higher than a quit attempt without help and support.

This year you will see Hans Klok and Patricia Paay in all kinds of spots on TV and on radio. ‘I’ve been smoking for far too long,’ says Hans Klok. ‘I’ve said so many times in the past that I’m going to stop. But it’s always been my guilty pleasure. For me, that cigarette was a moment to relax. But that must be over.’

Patricia Paay

Patricia Paay started smoking again a few years ago. After a stressful period, she grabbed a cigarette and soon there were more. As a result, her voice dropped an octave. “It’s time to get rid of this bad habit. Smoking is bad. For your health, for your voice, for everything. I am also completely confident that I will make it.’

Quit smoking with Stoptober

For Stoptober participants, there is a special Stoptober app (free). In this app you can read what quitting smoking means for your health and you will find tips. The app also has a group function, so that you can get support from, for example, your football team, your neighbors or your colleagues. through social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) you can stay informed and you can share experiences with other quitters.

You can now register via the website. You can then make use of all the support that Stoptober has to offer. The Stoptober app will be available to download from the end of September. The non-smoking journey will then start on October 1st.

Offer for companies

In addition to support for individual participants, Stoptober has – as in previous years – a special offer for companies and organizations that want to bring smoking cessation to their employees’ attention. Companies can go to the website Stoptober companies order promotional materials and request additional training.

Stoptober is an initiative of KWF, the Lung Fund, the Heart Foundation, Health Funds for Smoke-Free and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
