SEVILLA, 31 (EUROPE PRESS)

The Hospital Quirónsalud Infanta Luisa has received this Thursday the prize of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Seville (Ramse) and Royal and Illustrious Official College of Physicians of Seville for the best work 2019 on the topic of ‘Medicine and medical specialties’ for’ Results after the implementation of a program for the control of infections related to health care and appropriate use of antimicrobials’.

Specifically, the prize has been awarded to the head of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Dr. Juan González Maestre, after the success achieved in achieving the objectives of the Comprehensive Program for Prevention, Control of Infections related to Assistance Sanitary and appropriate use of Antimicrobials (Pirasoa) in the hospital.

In this regard, according to a statement, the specialist has indicated that it implies “recognition of the teamwork of all hospital professionals, which means that it improves the quality of infections related to the healthcare of admitted patients. in our center. “

“This program entails a decrease in these infections, a reduction in multiresistant bacteria and an improvement in the quality of the prescription of antibiotic treatment,” says Juan González Maestre, who also emphasizes the importance of recognizing the work of all team, since Pirasoa, a pioneer in private health, “would not have been possible without the close collaboration of the hospital management, of the doctors of the center in their different specialties and without the work of the nursing staff, taking care of our patients 24 hours a day. “

The program contemplates the implantation and follow-up of infections related to the care activity during a year of a total of 8,496 admitted patients. According to Dr. González Maestre, “the methodology used allows a cultural change in the approach to infections to fight against bacterial resistance through the appropriate use of antibiotics, recommended and recognized by WHO and the European Parliament.”

Spain is the country with the highest consumption of antibiotics in the world and one of the first in number of infections caused by resistant bacteria. Among other measures, Pirasoa monitors indicators adapted to the local plan of each hospital to know quarterly the measures to be adopted and the monitoring of multi-resistant bacteria, improves the quality of the antibiotic prescription through the advice among professionals who evaluate each prescription, its indication or its duration, as well as fosters a cultural and organizational change in the pressure of the prescription and monitors the defined daily doses to know which are the most prescribed antibiotics, those that have the greatest ecological impact, and so on.

Thus, the start-up of Pirasoa at the Quirónsalud Infanta Luisa Hospital has successfully passed its first stage, although the head of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) has stressed that there is still a long way to go, always with the only one objective of improving the quality and safety of patients.
