Quirónsalud incorporates a new technique for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer

Quirónsalud Field of Gibraltar advances and innovates in The fight against breast cancer. The hospital has taken an important step in the diagnosis and treatment of this cancer with the incorporation of a new technology that allows biopsies of the sentinel node in women with breast cancer using a non-radioactive system.

“The sentinel nodes they are the first lymph nodes into which a tumor drains. If they do not have cancer, then it is likely that the disease has not spread. Until now, to locate the sentinel node, a radioisotope (nuclear medicine) was injected, which forced patients to travel to other centers. The important thing about this new procedure is that allows us to evaluate in a single intervention and in a few minutes the stage in which the cancer is found”, Explains the surgeon at the Quirónsalud Campo de Gibraltar hospital, Jose Maria Mata.

For the specialist one of the most outstanding benefits of this new system, called Sentimag, is that the period of uncertainty for patients is reduced. “We shortened deadlines substantially. Waiting time is reduced and, consequently, the anxiety that usually accompanies patients in these types of cases is lessened. In addition, the medical team can act immediately instead of waiting for them. results of a scan, which is a type of nuclear imaging test.

The Quirónsalud Campo de Gibraltar hospital carried out on December 18 the first successful intervention in a 56-year-old patient who had a breast tumor detected. The center of the region is positioned with this technique as the only private center in Andalusia to incorporate this technology, which, according to the hospital’s medical director, the doctor Mathieu Juvín Bouvier, “represents a qualitative leap in patient care and offers specialists an equal or even improved result with respect to the conventional procedure”.

Finally, surgeon José María Mata emphasizes that this new procedure “is indicated as a diagnostic test for breast cancer and skin cancer (melanoma) and does not manifest any incompatibility with current treatments against cancer (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy …) “.

The Quirónsalud Hospital Group currently has in Andalusia with seven hospitals located in the cities of Malaga, Marbella, Los Barrios, two in Seville, Córdoba and Huelva, as well as 18 specialty and diagnostic medical centers and a surgical day hospital, which position it as a private hospital leader in this autonomous community.
