SEVILLA 23 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Dermatology service specialized in oncology at the Quirónsalud Sagrado Corazón and Infanta Luisa hospitals has consolidated itself in performing <a href="http://www.world-today-news.com/mohs-surgery-laser-rf-and-new-biological-drugs-for-skin-cancer-some-of-the-topics-that-will-be-addressed-at-cilad-2022/" title="Mohs surgery, laser/RF and new biological drugs for skin cancer, some of the topics that will be addressed at CILAD 2022″>Mohs surgery, the technique that has transformed the process of identifying and eliminating skin cancer. Since its incorporation into the service portfolio in 2021, more than 500 interventions have been performed, a fact that has positioned both private centers as leaders in Andalusia in the performance of this surgery.
In a press release, the hospitals point out that Dr. Tomás Toledo, head of oncological dermatology at the Quirónsalud Sagrado Corazón and Infanta Luisa hospitals, has detailed that approximately one in three patients who choose to have surgery comes from outside the province of Seville. , and around 15% of the total comes from outside Andalusia, which is why it states that “no other private center in Andalusia handles a comparable volume and complexity of cases.”
“This flow of patients reflects not only the trust of other dermatologists, who refer complex cases to our centers for resolution, which has led to a high demand that has also led to us receiving specialist doctors in training and colleagues. other communities that wish to become familiar with the Mohs technique, which is a recognition of our reference position in this field,” he highlighted. Luis Ortega and Anna Bota, dermatology specialists at the Quirónsalud Infanta Luisa and Sagrado Corazón hospitals, complete the team of experts who perform this technique in both centers.
Both specialists affirm that Mohs surgery has “radically” transformed the treatment of skin cancer by allowing a thorough and precise removal, layer by layer, until completely tumor-free margins are achieved. This technique, which allows “immediate” evaluation of the removed tissue, has proven to be especially effective in areas of high aesthetic and functional impact, in recurrent or high-risk tumors. “It has redefined the standard of treatment in complex cases, providing greater peace of mind to both patients and professionals by being able to offer a complete treatment,” they emphasize.
MOHS SURGERY, A VERY PRESENT TECHNIQUE WITH A LOT OF FUTURE
Mohs surgery is the most indicated treatment for high-risk basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, especially in cosmetically sensitive areas or in cases of recurrence after previous treatments. It is particularly effective in tumors with diffuse margins or in immunocompromised patients. The process itself consists of surgical removal of the cancer layer by layer, with immediate histological examination of the removed tissue under a microscope, ensuring tumor-free margins before completing the intervention.
Regarding the future of this technique, Dr. Toledo has highlighted that, currently, the incorporation of artificial intelligence is being explored to speed up and improve the analysis of tumor patterns, which will allow greater efficiency in real time during surgeries. “Likewise, we rely on Quirónsalud’s corporate Teledermatology program, which allows us to refer those cases susceptible to it to Mohs, with a minimum waiting time,” he concluded.
This method places the percentage of patients cured at almost 100% and has already demonstrated its effectiveness against squamous cell carcinomas and in the removal of tumors in especially complex areas in several pioneering interventions in private healthcare carried out in the Quirónsalud hospitals in Seville.
