Quintet of Brazilian champion clubs starts well and dominates dispute for the G-4 in Serie B | Brazilian series b

The dispute for leadership in Serie B follows the “expected” script in 2022. After seven almost complete rounds, the classification zone is being commanded by the clubs with the best historical record in football. The Second Division has six Brazilian champion teams, and five of them are dominating the fight for the G-4.

The largest number of titles are gathered in the first four positions of the table: Cruzeiro, Sport, Bahia and Vasco. There are 11 achievements added by the quartet – which occupies the classification zone for the national elite.

Grêmio – owner of four Brazilian cups – appears shortly after in the dispute. Tricolor is in sixth place – behind the “intruder” Novorizontino – and missed a chance to enter the G-4 by taking a 1-1 stoppage time draw with Ituano on Monday night.

In the list of champions, only Guarani is not fighting at the top. Bugre has only one victory in the competition, is in the relegation zone – in 17th place – and is undergoing a new restructuring process. The team said goodbye to coach Daniel Paulista earlier this month and is under the interim management of Ben-Hur Moreira as he looks for a new coach.

In the lead of Série B, Cruzeiro was still a mystery at the beginning of the season – mainly because there were doubts about how the club would behave under new management. Raposa disputes the Second Division for the third year in a row and now – under the management of Ronaldo Fenômeno – starts with 76.2% of success in the competition.

Vasco lived with a similar scenario, since it is under new administration and follows the Cruzeiro movement – with the creation of the SAF underway. Cruz-Maltino was relegated in 2020 and disputes the Série B for the second consecutive time. At the moment, he has a 62% success rate – in 4th place – and still hasn’t lost in the competition.

In second and third place, Sport and Bahia appear as regional powers and historically are candidates for the top of the table. Something that has been confirmed at the beginning of the championship.

The scenario, however, is still surprising. That’s because the Pernambuco Rubro-Negro, for example, arrived for the championship after a season marked by administrative errors, public controversies and five presidents in charge of the club in 2021.

Now, the team still suffers from performance criticism, mainly aimed at coach Gilmar Dal Pozzo. But it maintains the vice-leadership of Serie B – with four wins, two draws and one defeat.

“Last” of the champions in the dispute for the G-4, Grêmio even debuted in Serie B with greater favoritism. Mainly because it has stabilized finances, unlike its rivals. So much so that Tricolor managed to sustain a structure of remnants of Serie A – with the permanence of names like Diego Souza, for example.

Roger Machado’s team maintains a 55% success rate – in sixth position – and was within the G-4 at the beginning of the round. He only lost the position because Vasco and Novorizontino won in the round, and Tricolor still hasn’t played. Now, it has chances to regain space and intensify – even more – the dispute.
