Quincy Promes on trial for assault and suspicion of drug trafficking

Quincy Promes

NOS News

Quincy Promes came into the picture with the police in 2018 because he would be involved in drug smuggling. The Criminal Intelligence Team then received information that the footballer had invested money in the cocaine trade.

In concrete terms, the police could not do anything about it, but it later became clear that the former Ajax player had contacts in the drug world, may have had weapons and was in possession of a PGP telephone with which encrypted messages could be sent. The police then got permission to tap his phone.

All this has become clear today at the court in Amsterdam, where Promes is on trial for assaulting a cousin in 2020 and the suspicion of involvement in drug trafficking.

‘Shit man’

According to the Public Prosecution Service, Promes invested 200,000 euros in two batches of cocaine that arrived at the port of Antwerp at the end of January 2020. Its value was about 75 million euros. Promes is said to have been in contact with the thieves via his PGP telephone. They wouldn’t have known exactly where to be.

A party, which was hidden behind bags of salt, was intercepted by the Belgian police. When he found out, Promes is said to have said, “Shit man. So half is saferisk of the trade”.

Cousin abuse

Because the police tapped Promes’ phone, the suspicion arose that he had stabbed a cousin in the knee at a family party in 2020. He allegedly incriminated himself in several telephone conversations shortly after the stabbing. Those conversations were overheard by the detectives.

The footballer was not there today, just like at previous sessions. He is in Russia, where he plays football for Spartak Moscow. The court will rule on Monday, June 19 in the case of the stabbing. Promes does not have to be there himself. The OM is demanding a prison sentence of two years.

The case of cocaine smuggling will continue on August 11. According to his lawyers, Promes will return to the Netherlands for the substantive treatment. He says he is innocent in this case.
