At the end of the year there was another big rush in the Schützenhaus. Matthias Hubich from Pößnecker donated for the 100th time.

Queuing was announced on Wednesday in front of the Pößnecker Schützenhaus. Not because concerts or readings attracted many visitors in the event building, but because on the penultimate day of the year the German Red Cross (DRK) invited people to donate blood again – the nursing home in Pößneck-Ost is currently not available as an event location due to the corona. “It is our 99th total this year,” says Silvia Preußer, who is responsible for blood donation in the Saale-Orla district association.

And as she had expected, there was another real rush. “At the end of the year, many are at home, have time and want to do something good again,” she says. With foresight, she has packed significantly more packed lunches with juice, crackers, rolls, clementines and chocolate bars as a thank you for the donors than usual and is constantly making coffee at the counter in the small hall. In the rear area there are eight loungers that are almost completely occupied.

Fortunately, the donors could not have let themselves be prevented from coming by the additional safety precautions due to the Corona regulations such as measuring a fever at the entrance and wearing a face mask. “On the contrary: although we were able to offer a few fewer appointments than last year, the number of blood donors has increased,” says Silvia Preußer. An average of 46 donors came in 2020, compared to 44 in 2019.

Five blood donors were there for the 125th time

This year there were a total of 4718 transfusion units, 267 donors came for the first time, the responsible person has calculated. Two donors gave their blood for the 150th time this year, five were there for the 125th time and three for the 100th time. Matthias Hubich is one of the latter.

“I always had nosebleeds,” he explains, why he started donating blood back in the GDR era. He got the tip that that might help – and that’s how it turned out. For health reasons he had to take a break for a few years, but then went back to donate blood. “My body is prepared for it – I really wait for the next invitation,” says the 63-year-old Pößnecker and adds: “I’m happy that I can help.” His blood group 0 negative is always in demand. “It is important to drink at least two liters of water before donating,” is the man’s tip for first-time donors. Without this, in his experience, the blood would not flow properly.

Silvia Preußer thanked him with a bottle of wine and a voucher. She is happy about everyone who is loyal to her. “The blood is used again and again, we depend on it,” she says. Anyone could get into the situation that they need a transfusion, she points out.
