Quetzaltenango: Transporters block access and fail to comply with agreement with the government

A group of transporters, made up of taxi drivers, freight drivers and truck drivers, blocked all access to the city of Quetzaltenango this Tuesday, in support of the 48 Cantons of Totonicapán, who also maintain blockades in that region.

The blockades began at 7 in the morning and caused heavy congestion to enter the city.

At noon, leaders of the movement met with the governor of Quetzaltenango, commanders of the National Civil Police (PNC), representatives of the Attorney General’s Office (PGN) and the Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office, to make the measures more flexible and that the population had options to mobilize.

At the meeting it was agreed that the passage would be released at 11, 1, and 4 p.m., for periods of time, and that at 8 p.m. the blockades would be removed to block again at 6 in the morning of the next day.

However, that agreement was not fulfilled. Transporters who were located at the blocked points stated that they did not agree with the commitments and did not allow passage.

On Wednesday, the blockades are expected to begin at 6 in the morning and end at night. They hope that the attorney general of the Public Ministry (MP), Consuelo Porras, and the head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity (FECI), Rafael Curruchiche, will resign.

The blockades have had a strong impact on the region’s economy.

Merchants and businessmen have reported million-dollar losses due to the impossibility of transporting their goods.
